I'll just throw my 2 cents in (was searching for Windows 10 concerning the Pre690 and found this):Īfter many, many hours of searching last year before finally acquiring my goal of dual quad Xeon's:

Honestly, if you don't already have a 0MY171 A02 board and you're not looking to scour the Internet looking for a refurbished one, you can always install two Xeon 5160 dual-cores with a 3GHz clock speed. I'veĪlso heard of some hacks involving removing the CMOS battery and bringing the unit up from a cold start as well. Some users have been able to get dual-quads installed and functioning on 690 motherboard 0DT029 and 0MY171 A01 with a trick involving a BIOS downgrade to A01 and bringing the unit up from a cold start with no AC power to the power supply initially. The issue isn't in Windows, but in hardware components of the 690's logic board and firmware. The sticker ID can be found at the top of the board just under the hard drive caddies. In order to run dual-quad core processors without POST issues in your PrecisionĦ90, you must own a system with motherboard ID 0MY171 A02 (yes, the revision matters). The Xeon X5335 is a quad-core processor, which will only function properly in certain revisions of Dell Precision 690 motherboards or used in a single processor configuration. I've spent more time working around the hardware limitations in this system than I'd like to admit. Welcome to the wonderful world of owning a Precision 690. I've tried for a few years but I cant figure out why I am having issues running smoothly. I can buy a proper graphics card later to really fit my CGI needs, right now I have a GeForce card in there but I would like to go pro, as far as this pc is concerned. If anyone can help, I can post the components later,īut for the most part its an Xeon 5335 series cpu. I went thru alot of time and effort to make it work. Now, can anyone help me with finding out if I can do this with Windows 10 Pro. Took me several times to boot until it loaded Windows, and the system read there were 2 CPUs there.

I tried at one time w Win 7 on it to run the 2 CPUs. However, I have an exact 2nd CPU and heatsink.

I always had one cpu installed running Win XP 32 bit, and Win 7 Pro and 8.1 Pro 64 bit. I have a Dell Precision 690 with two available CPU sockets on the motherboard.
